Women's Economic Security Agenda

University of Maine at Augusta

About Us

Our Mission:

Women, Work, and Community is committed to improving the economic lives of Maine women and their families. We work with women "where they are" and provide them with support, guidance, and the tools they need to take the next steps toward a more promising future. We provide training, advocacy and assistance in four program areas:

  • Workforce development, including career planning, employment, retention and advancement in jobs that pay a living wage; and access to education and skills training;
  • Microenterprise development, including business plan development, start-up support and coaching, access to credit through a micro-loan fund, and linkages to on-going technical assistance;
  • Asset development through a matched saving program, car and computer donations, and training in money management;
  • Leadership development, including a curriculum that explores the workings of the local economy, women's roles in building community, and opportunities to practice leadership; a legislative awareness day, conferences, and outdoor adventure challenges.

A bit of History:

In 1978 Women, Work, and Community began by helping displaced homemakers value their work as homemakers, identify transferable skills, and re-enter the labor market with confidence. Later we added training programs to help them start their own businesses and to better understand their local economy and become leaders in their own right. Most recently, we have developed strategies to increase women's financial management skills and their ability to acquire assets through a Steps to Economic Security Initiative, which integrates critical financial management skills throughout our program areas.
